Add a Little Sparkle to Your Life at GeekCraft Expo Midwest's Fall Mall

Mad Mavens Creations GeekCraft Expo

The GeekCraft Expo Midwest Fall Mall is right around the corner--make sure to join us October 14 and 15 at the Madison Masonic Center for our curated, free craft market filled to the brim with amazing local creators!

We chatted with Elizabeth Price of Mad Mavens Creations, one of our amazing exhibitors, to give you a sneak peek at some of the fantastic items you'll find for sale!

GeekCraft Expo: Can you introduce our readers to the types of crafts you make?

Elizabeth Price: Jewelry for Unicorns, Mermaids, and Sparkly Humans! My sister and I have always been super crafty and create unique items virtually all the time. Most of our products are necklaces, but we also have many rings, earrings, small home decor items, and unique stickers. We are inspired by tattoos, geeky fandoms, mythical creatures, Kawaii, RuPaul's Drag Race, and much more. We only create things we want to wear (which can be trouble at times), and we hope you love them as much as we do!

GCE: What inspired you to include Morse Code in your jewelry?

EP: We actually saw some necklaces that were peoples names or standard phrases like "mother" and "sister." We loved the idea of being able to hide a message in plain sight, especially one that gave power to the wearer. We also wanted to go small with the beads, so it would be so much more discreet. We started with phrases we felt we'd always wanted to secretly be able to wear to past jobs, such as "Kiss My A**" and "F*** Off." Now its grown to include other passive aggressive statements, pop culture references, female empowerment, and trendy slang.

GCE: How did you get started selling to the public?

EP: We launched our Etsy shop in June 2016. It was the friendliest selling platform for handmade items, and I knew a few others who used it when they started their own businesses, so I knew I'd have sound advice on how to navigate online sales. Being relatively young in business terms, we're still figuring this whole thing out. This year we made it our goal to show at various fairs and fests to get more notice. Geek Craft Expo will be our fourth this year. We also were able to launch the wholesale side of our business, and we are even going to be a featured item in a September monthly subscription box [Editor's note: follow Mad Mavens Creations on Facebook for the official announcement!].

GCE: What are your favorite pieces to make?

EP: Resin is typically our favorite, because we love choosing the glitter and other additives to mix in. It's always a little bit of a surprise to see the final product, since we rarely do the same mix per batch.

GCE: What are your most popular items?

EP: By far our most popular items are our Glitterati Unicorn necklace, Mermaid at Heart necklace, Big Bite Little Arms T-Rex necklace, and our Morse Code "Boss Bitch" necklace.

GCE: What are your can’t-miss geeky TV shows and movies?

EP: We both adore Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and Bob's Burgers. Liz is our truly resident geek and loves all things Marvel, Firefly, Hunger Games, and Supernatural. She also has a severe obsession with all books written by Sarah J. Mass.

GCE: What kinds of things will you be bringing to GeekCraft Expo Midwest this year?

EP: True to form, we'll have quite a bit of jewelry that is glitter heavy. We have a few home goods items we're launching (i.e. mini resin glitter cacti, glitter flower orbs, etc.). Lastly, we'll have various geek stickers we designed and hand crafted.

Our thanks to Elizabeth Price and Mad Mavens Creations for answering all of our questions. See them October 14 and 15 at the GeekCraft Expo Midwest Fall Mall in Madison, WI!
